The video game industry has plenty of titles that look like they were gently lifted from some other game that came before them. But few are quite as blatant about it as Mariostro Strikers Soccer League, a recent arrival on Xbox Marketplace. It could charitably be called an “homage” to Mario Strikers: Battle League, but it’s unlikely that Nintendo will let that go without a response.

Via Nintendo Life, LightGamess–with an extra “s”–is the publisher of Mariostro Strikers Soccer League, which was released January 10 on Xbox Marketplace. The description of the game adds some unexpected humor to the listing because someone seemingly forgot to put the actual name of the game in the opening paragraph and never bothered to fix the mistake.

“Dive into the thrilling world of arcade-style soccer with [Your Game Name Here]! Experience the excitement of 4v4 matches, where every player counts. With 10 unique and fun teams to choose from, you’ll dribble, pass, and shoot your way to victory while defending your goal with a skilled goalkeeper,” reads a line from the game’s official description.

The cover art for Mariostro Strikers Soccer League doesn’t reflect the art style…

When Dr. Doot took the stage on the final day of AGDQ 2025, the pressure was on. The speedrunner, whose nickname is surprisingly descriptive–he has a doctorate in music composition–was attempting a live run of Elden Ring using a digital saxophone as a controller. Beating Elden Ring’s toughest bosses via traditional methods is difficult enough, but Dr. Doot put that PhD to good use and quickly slayed the final boss, as well as the maddingly difficult optional boss Malenia.

GameSpot had the chance to chat with Dr. Doot (who wished to only use his handle rather than his real name), and we were surprised to learn how the saxophone speedruns came to be. Rather than coming about simply as another way to beat Elden Ring or Dark Souls, they were an extension of Dr. Doot’s practice on his digital instrument, the Roland Aerophone.

“The Aerophone actually became a game controller initially as a joke,” he explained. “I actually got the Aerophone to help me with my music composition, because I play saxophone. And then I found the program that you can use to translate MIDI input, which is what the saxophone sends to the computer, to [computer] keybo…

If you’re looking for a last-minute gift for a Nintendo fan who grew up during the Game Boy era, the newly released ModRetro Chromatic is one of the coolest retro gaming gadgets of 2024. The Chromatic is a modernized Game Boy Color that looks, plays, and feels like the real thing. Unlike most retro handhelds that aim to do a little bit of everything, the Chromatic is unabashedly committed to the singular goal of replicating the GBC experience as you fondly remember it. For the subset of retro gamers who crave authenticity, the Chromatic is an undeniable success. It’s also one of the best-built portable devices I’ve ever used.

There’s no shortage of retro gaming handhelds on the market today, including many that mimic Nintendo’s iconic Game Boy family. Most are emulation devices that can offer solid experiences for budget prices. But whereas most of these devices resemble the general look of the Game Boy, the Chromatic is one of the few that truly replicates the experience of playing on one. It takes “paying homage” to the next level. If you prefer original hardware, whether stock or modded, the Chromatic is the closest approximation to the Game…

After over 10 years of waiting, NCCA football finally returns with the release of EA Sports College Football 25. The game has plenty of new features and modes to experiment with, as well as returning fan favorites like Road to Glory, which once again factors academic success into playing time. In fact, doing well in school and maintaining a high-enough GPA even allows you to skip your senior-year studies altogether.

How to skip Senior Year academics

At the beginning of your freshman year, a notification pops up stating that your student-athlete can essentially graduate early if they maintain a good Grade Point Average. The only criteria required to accomplish this is to average a 3.8 GPA across your first three years.

Skipping your senior-year academic requirements allows you to focus on other aspects that influence how you play and improve. So, instead of using the limited energy points you have on academics, they can be used to raise training (XP), health, brand, or leadership.

The Switch has seen several HD remasters and remakes released on it lately, and if you didn’t pick up Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD at launch last month, you can get a pretty good discount on it right now. Over at Woot, you can save 25% on the game, as the retailer is offering it for the frightfully good price of $45.

Woot’s listing shows the US box art, but the URL mentions “international version,” so it’s possible you’d get an imported copy from a different region. However, this wouldn’t change the playability of the game, as the Nintendo Switch is a region-free console. The only difference here would be the ESRB rating on the box would be replaced with another region’s ratings board logo.

But back to the game itself. Originally released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013 as Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD stars Mario’s taller brother as he finds himself in another haunted neighborhood. Fortunately, the plumber is equipped with some ghostbusting gear and can hoover up the pesky phantoms haunting Evershade Valley. This remaster updates the game for the Switch, and while the old-school tank controls do take some getting used to, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is full of charm…

Infamous internet animation series Skibidi Toilet, made using Valve’s Source Filmmaker software and featuring assets from Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike, is in discussions to be turned into a Michael Bay movie.

Bay, who directed disaster film blockbusters such as Armageddon and Pearl Harbour, is reportedly in talks to launch a Skibidi Toilet film and TV franchise with former Paramount Pictures boss Adam Goodman.

“We are absolutely in talks right now, both on the television side and the earliest conversations right now on the film side,” Goodman told Variety. “But it’s not a be-all, end-all for us.”

Skibidi Toilet, for those mercifully still unaware, is an enormously-popular online animation series that has been likened to a Slender Man for Generation Alpha. (Fellow Millenials, think a post-apocalyptic Salad Fingers for tweens.)

The series has accumulated over 65bn views on YouTube, another 15bn on Tiktok, and is ubiquitous on Roblox, where countless spin-off games lie.

What is a Skibidi Toilet? I’m so glad you asked. In short, it’s a race of evil toilets with human heads. They’re led by G-Toilet, an evil toilet with the head of G-Man from Half…

Warframe’s been fully embracing its weird side over the course of its last couple of expansions, but if you thought its mood-world westerns and long-lost dimension-shifting labs were as far as the free-to-play shooter was willing to go, then you might want to brace yourself: developer Digital Extremes has revealed first gameplay of its upcoming 1999 story expansion and, well, let’s just say you get to go into space to kill a 90s boyband.

We’ve known 1999 was likely to be an odd ‘un ever since its tease at last year’s TennoCon utterly stole the show – catapulting players away from Warframe’s usual far-future sci-fi aesthetic to an eerily familiar Earth-like world of grungy subways stations and retro tech. And now, with TennoCon 2024 underway, Digital Extremes has shared more on its audacious new expansion.

To get a few burning questions out of the way first, yes it’s really set in 1999 (New Year’s Eve to be exact) and no, this isn’t quite the Earth we know – but it’s close enough, full of extremely familiar era-appropriate artefacts that feel gleefully incongruous within Warframe’s wider world. And that starts with 1999’s new hub area: an abandoned 90s…
